2014 Health Disparities Conference Recognizes Distinguished Researchers

ATLANTA, GEORGIA — November 26, 2014: The 2014 Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference (formerly known as the International Symposium on Minority Health and Health Disparities) will honor two award recipients during its program titled “Transdisciplinary Collaborations: Evolving Dimensions of US and Global Health Equity,” December 1–3 Gaylord National Harbor Resort and Convention Center, National Harbor, Maryland. Dr. Richard Yanagihara will be presented the Frederick C. Greenwood Award of the Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program Directors Association; Dr. Glorisa Canino will receive the 2014 Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference Research Excellence Award.

The Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) Program Directors Association will present Dr. Richard Yanagihara, Professor of Pediatrics at the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawaii, with the award dedicated to the memory of Dr. Frederick C. Greenwood, an internationally acclaimed scientist and exemplary scientific administrator who worked at the University of Hawaii Manoa. Dr. Yanagihara is an outstanding researcher known for his prominent role in health disparity research in the nation. He has assisted in building capacity of the University of Hawaii for a laboratory-based retrovirology research program. Dr. Yanagihara has played a critical role in the development of infrastructure for infectious diseases research and has provided direct mentoring of junior and mid-career faculty.

The 2014 Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference Research Excellence Award will be presented to Dr. Glorisa Canino. The purpose of the award is to honor an individual who exemplifies an ideal of research excellence and a commitment of service to the research community, especially as it pertains to minority populations. Dr. Canino is the Director of the Behavioral Sciences Research Institute in the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico. She is a leading Latino researcher in the areas of cross-cultural child and adult psychiatric epidemiology, pediatric asthma, health care disparities, and service utilization patterns and barriers to care faced by Latino children and adults. Her domestic and international collaborations include analysis of data sets in multi-site research studies and in the translation and adaptation of instruments.

About the 2014 Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference

The 2014 Minority Health and Health Disparities Grantees' Conference attendees include scientists engaged in health disparities research, healthcare and public health professionals, public policy professionals, and community-based and faith-based organizations. The conference scientific program will highlight the excellence and innovation in basic, translational, and clinical research from the programs supported by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), and focus on early career investigators through training and professional development workshops, mentoring, and meet the expert sessions. The Conference has been designed to offer opportunities for sharing research information in areas related to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, cancer, women's health, mental health, infectious disease, stroke, and behavioral and community health with special emphasis on minority health and health disparities.
